Project Kitchen Makeover

Updated: Oct 14, 2021

If you’re like me, the kitchen is where you drop everything off when you get home. My kitchen was practical and clean, however, it didn’t exactly scream…let’s hang out here. It was boring and basic and just plain uninspiring.

When we moved in, the kitchen had all sorts of 90’s vibes going on. From the mauve laminate counters and backsplash to the muted wine bottle and grape wallpaper border it was a disaster. Did I mention MAUVE?! The 90’s called, and they want their design aesthetic back. Check out the before…

Changing the footprint of the kitchen was not an option and our budget was tight. The goal was to create an updated classic and clean workspace. Could we come back stronger than a 90’s trend?

  • Cabinets were given a fresh coat of paint since they were in decent condition

  • Removed wallpaper border and painted the walls a cool white

  • Out with the laminate! See ya later MAUVE (it’s not me, it’s definitely you)

    • Granite countertops – solid surface was a must

    • Beige ceramic subway tiles in a herringbone pattern for the backsplash – Mr. Muscles picked the pattern. My dream tile was white mini octagons but those were on back order. We found this greige tile on sale at Lowe’s and decided it would be a good plan “B.”

  • Indoor/outdoor cordless shades to replace the faux vinyl slatted blinds

  • Stainless steel appliances (matching)

  • Undermounted sink

  • Updated faucet – the last one leaked constantly and wasn’t tall enough to fill a stock pot when place in the sink. The faucet is seriously MY FAVORITE feature!

  • New wood flooring to replace the ugly yellowed large square tiles – those had to go

  • New windows without the prairie grids and windows that opened and closed

The gauntlet was thrown. Did we rise to the challenge? I’m going to go with HECK YES, WE DID! Kitchen renovation was accomplished. The backdrop has been painted, so to speak…now how to soften and warm up those whites and grays?

Enter my friend, Melissa “The Kitchen Whisperer.” She is the visionary behind Lyla Blake Designs. She was amazing and brought over everything needed to make the kitchen homey and welcoming…in a word “bliss.” It turned out perfect! Best of all, I was able to flex my photog skills. Check out the results!

Melissa (pictured above in photo slider – isn’t she adorable?!) was able to turn my kitchen table into an enticing tablescape worthy of any magazine. Of course, my everyday tablescape is super practical with only a fruit bowl and placemats. If only I could have a table this inviting every day…If you happen to live in the Tulsa metro area (Oklahoma) and are looking for someone to turn your design visions into reality when it comes to décor, reach out to Lylablakedesigns@gmail.com to schedule an appointment.
